Tasmania travel guide

Why Hobart & Freycinet should be your next Australian escape.

If you’ve been searching for a destination that feels wild, untouched and quietly luxurious… Tasmania might just be your next obsession.

I recently spent 5 days exploring Hobart and Freycinet, and while it was a short trip, it gave me a taste of just how special this part of Australia is. Think rugged coastlines, fresh air, incredible food, and boutique luxury stays this is slow travel done right.

5 day Tasmania Itinerary
Day 1-2 Freycinet National Park & Coles Bay

We hired a car (a must in Tasmania!) and made our way to Freycinet National Park, one of the most iconic destinations in the state.

The highlight?

The hike up to the lookout over Wineglass Bay. It’s one of those views that genuinely stops you in your tracks crystal clear water, white sand, and that perfectly curved bay.

We based ourselves in Coles Bay, soaking up the peaceful, nature-filled surroundings. It’s the kind of place where you slow down without even trying.

Day 3
Bay of fires & The ultimate road trip stop

We drove up to the Bay of Fires, famous for its bright orange lichen-covered rocks and turquoise water it honestly feels untouched.

And along the way… a very Tassie experience:
A stop at “The Pig in the Paddock” yes, exactly what it sounds like. A quirky little bar with a pig roaming around. It’s random, fun, and one of those travel moments you don’t forget. Also, the pig drinks beer..... what?

Day 4-5
Hobart City, Culture & Markets

Back to Hobart, where things shift from nature to culture.

We explored:

  • Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) – bold, immersive, and unlike any museum I’ve ever visited
  • Salamanca Market – buzzing with local produce, crafts, and incredible food (Sundays only!)

Hobart has this cool mix of history, waterfront charm, and modern luxury—it’s small, but there’s a lot to love.

Where to stay in Tasmania
My top picks

Freycinet Lodge ( Coles Bay)

We stayed in a Premier Cabin, and it honestly felt like our own little private retreat.

What I loved:

  • Spacious, peaceful, surrounded by nature
  • Wildlife right at your doorstep
  • A standout restaurant overlooking the water (sunset dinners here = unreal)

The Tasman Hobart

For a completely different vibe, The Tasman delivers luxury in the heart of Hobart.

Why it works:

  • Prime location near Salamanca Place
  • Beautiful design blending heritage + modern
  • Perfect base to explore the city on foot
Tasmania Food Scene:
Fresh, Local & Seriously good.

While this trip was more about exploring, one thing stood out across the board the quality of food in Tasmania is next level.

Think:

  • Fresh seafood straight from the ocean
  • Local wines and cool-climate produce
  • Cozy dining experiences with incredible views

And dining at Freycinet Lodge overlooking the water? That’s a moment in itself.

Tasmania Travel Tips
Don't skip these
  • Pre-book your Freycinet National Park pass (included if staying at Freycinet Lodge)
  • Book MONA in advance – it’s popular and unlike anything else
  • Plan around Salamanca Market (Sunday only)
  • Pack for all seasons – Tassie can get cold, even outside winter
  • Hire a car – it’s the best way to explore at your own pace
  • Cascades Brewerary - If you can pre book a tour and get in to look its pretty cool and a unique experience. Otherwise drive there and enjoy the view and some drinks. The food there was also delicious.
  • Salamanca warf - A nice stroll at night with lots of nice restaurants all lit up and it can get very busy so again book something if you see something you like.
My Honest thoughts on Tasmania

I’ll be honest, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface.

But from what I experienced in just a few days… Tasmania is raw, beautiful, and full of surprises. It’s perfect if you love a mix of nature, food, and a little bit of luxury without the crowds.

It’s definitely somewhere I’ll be heading back to—with a longer itinerary next time.
