14 Day South Africa Adventure

Safari, The Garden Route & Cape Town Magic

Some destinations surprise you. Others completely capture your heart. South Africa does both.

I recently returned from an incredible 14-day South Africa itinerary, exploring everything from the vibrant streets of Johannesburg, to a luxury Eastern Cape safari, a scenic Garden Route road trip, wine tasting in Franschhoek, and finishing in the breath taking city of Cape Town.

It’s a destination that truly offers everything in one trip, wildlife, dramatic coastlines, world-class food and wine, charming towns, and unforgettable cultural experiences.

If you’ve ever dreamed about a luxury African safari combined with stunning landscapes and incredible cuisine, here’s a glimpse into my journey.

Joahnnesburg
Culture, History & A Powerful Start to a South Africa Itinerary

Our journey began in Johannesburg, South Africa’s vibrant and energetic gateway city.

One of the most meaningful experiences here was a Soweto walking tour. Walking through this historic township with a local guide gave us a deeper understanding of South Africa’s history, resilience, and culture.

We also enjoyed an unforgettable dinner at Marble Restaurant, a must-visit for food lovers visiting the city. Known for its live-fire cooking and incredible atmosphere, it set the tone for just how amazing the food scene in South Africa can be.

Where I Stayed

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa in Sandton was a 10/10. I stayed in the Courtyard Suites, which are elegant, spacious and peaceful after a long flight. If you’re visiting, definitely ask to see the Ardmore Suite it’s absolutely stunning.

Eastern Cape Safari
Lions in Trees & Elephants Up Close

Next up was what many travellers dream of when visiting Africa a luxury safari in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

At Kariega Game Reserve, I stayed in the Main Lodge, which offers beautiful bungalow-style accommodation overlooking the reserve. It’s perfect for families, with four-bedroom lodge options and incredible views across the bush.

One of my most memorable moments here? Watching a lion climb a tree something even seasoned guides don’t see often.

We then continued to Shamwari Private Game Reserve, where I stayed at the Manor House, an absolutely stunning property that felt incredibly exclusive and private.

The game viewing here was phenomenal. My personal highlight was watching a herd of elephants walk past our safari vehicle, heading down to a watering hole. They were so close it felt surreal.

Another incredible moment happened during sundowners (a safari tradition of drinks at sunset). Out of nowhere a massive storm rolled in, and we had to race back to the lodge in torrential rain honestly one of the most thrilling travel moments I’ve ever had.

A standout feature of these private game reserves is that only two vehicles are allowed at wildlife sightings, creating a far more intimate safari experience.

I also loved visiting the wildlife rehabilitation centre at Shamwari, where injured animals are cared for before being reintroduced back into the wild.

And the food? Absolutely incredible tapas-style dining each night, paired with excellent South African wines.

Driving the Garden Route
One of the World’s Most Beautiful Road Trips

After safari, we hit the road for one of the most iconic drives in the world the Garden Route.

This scenic coastal route is a must for anyone planning a South Africa road trip itinerary. Think lush forests, rugged coastlines, charming seaside towns, and hidden local restaurants along the way.

One of my favourite unexpected stops was a tiny local restaurant called Cunzies. The food was incredible and it’s exactly the kind of place you’d never find without exploring.

Plettenberg Bay Adventures

In Plettenberg Bay, we stayed at The Old Rectory, a beautiful historic boutique property that perfectly blends coastal charm with luxury.

For something a little adventurous, we went black water tubing through the river caves, which was such a fun and unexpected experience.

Sunset in Knysna

We also spent time in Knysna, staying at the Protea Hotel Knysna Quays, a comfortable hotel right on the waterfront.

One of the highlights here was sailing on a catamaran at sunset across the lagoon a truly magical way to experience this beautiful coastal town.

Franschhoek
Wine, Food & One of the World’s Most Beautiful Wine Regions

Next stop was the stunning Franschhoek, the heart of the South Africa wine region.

Franschhoek feels like a little slice of Europe nestled among dramatic mountains and vineyards. I stayed at Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa, a picture-perfect property overlooking the valley.

One of the most fun experiences here was hopping aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which takes you between wineries for tastings throughout the valley.

Sipping world-class wine while rolling through vineyard landscapes is exactly as magical as it sounds.

Cape Town
Adventure, Style & One of the World’s Most Beautiful Cities

The final stop on this South Africa travel itinerary was Cape Town easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Here I stayed at Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel, in their stunning three-bedroom private residence complete with its own pool. It was absolutely beautiful and felt like a luxurious home base while exploring the city.

One of the most unique experiences here was riding vintage sidecars around Cape Town, which is such a fun way to explore the coastline and city streets.

And a special mention must go to the afternoon high tea at Cape Cadogan, which quickly became one of my favourite daily rituals.

What stood out most about South Africa

Beyond the scenery and wildlife, what truly made this trip special was the people.

South Africans are incredibly warm and welcoming, and the safari guides were unbelievably knowledgeable about wildlife and conservation.

It made every game drive feel like an educational experience as well as an adventure.
