Oahu & Maui Travel guide

Why Hawaii should be your next dream holiday

If Hawaii has been sitting on your “one day” list… consider this your sign. I’ve just returned from an unforgettable 6-night educational trip across Oahu and Maui and let me tell you, it’s everything you imagine and more.

Think sunrise rituals, luxury beachfront resorts, helicopter rides, hidden local eats, and that laid-back island magic that just hits differently. Here’s exactly what it’s like, from a travel agent who experienced it firsthand.

Trip Overview

3 nights in Oahu + 3 nights in Maui

📅 26th October – 1st November 2023

This was a hosted educational trip focused on showcasing Hawaii through social media—but beyond the content, it gave me a real, lived experience of both islands that I can now pass directly onto my Roamers.

Oahu Highlights
Culture, Energy & Iconic Waikiki

Staying in the heart of Waikiki, this part of the trip was all about culture, connection, and that classic Hawaiian vibe.

A Sunrise Like No Other

One of the most powerful experiences of the trip was the traditional Hiʻuwai sunrise ceremony. Standing on Waikiki Beach at sunrise, chanting E Ala E and entering the ocean for a cleansing ritual it was emotional, grounding, and honestly something I’ll never forget.

This is the kind of experience that turns a holiday into something deeper.

Culture Meets Luxury

We explored some of Waikiki’s most iconic hotels:

  • The Royal Hawaiian (the famous pink palace)
  • Sheraton Waikiki
  • Moana Surfrider

And wrapped up the day with a traditional Hawaiian Luau sunset, Polynesian dancers, live music… it was pure magic.

Foodie Moments You Can’t Miss

Oahu absolutely delivers when it comes to food:

  • Highway Inn – authentic Hawaiian cuisine (try Lau Lau)
  • Duke's Waikiki – home of the famous Hula Pie
  • Eating House 1849 – modern Hawaiian with a twist
  • Liliha Bakery – perfect for a sweet treat

Sunset Sailing & Experiences

We jumped on a Kamoauli sunset sail, where we learnt about Hawaiian traditions, hula, and even how to make poi—all while cruising along the coastline.

Maui Highlights
Luxury, Adventure & Natural Beauty

Then came Maui… and wow. This island is something else.

Helicopter Over Maui

A Blue Hawaiian helicopter flight over the island was hands down one of the biggest wow moments. Waterfalls, lush valleys, coastline—it’s the kind of view you just can’t get any other way.

Adventure Meets Sustainability

We spent a day with Maui Off-Road Adventures, getting dusty (very dusty!) while exploring the rugged landscape. What I loved most? They plant a tree every time they run a tour—such a beautiful way to give back.

The Most Iconic Restaurant in Maui

If you do ONE thing in Maui… book:

  • Mama's Fish House

It’s one of the hardest reservations to get—and for good reason. Incredible food, beachfront setting, and a true Hawaiian dining experience.

A Hidden Gem

We also stopped at Ocean Organic Farm & Distillery—a stunning setting with ocean views and a vodka tasting. Definitely one to add to your list.

Where I stayed
Honest hotel review

The Royal Hawaiian

Iconic. Pink everything. Absolute beachfront luxury. The luau here is one of the best experiences in Waikiki.

Wailea Beach Resort Marriott

My personal favourite.

  • Adults-only pool ✔️
  • Family splash zones ✔️
  • Snorkelling with turtles ✔️
  • Beachfront location ✔️

It truly has something for everyone.

 Fairmont Kea Lani

Beautiful luxury resort we only had one night here, but it’s perfect for those wanting a more upscale, relaxed stay.
